We are all aware of the unfolding human crisis facing the reported million people displaced in Northern Israel. Their terror, anguish and grief cause within us an indescribable soul-searing pain. We cannot be silent as blood spills and despair rages on. We cannot feel the comfort of our environs when over one million Israelis live the lives of refugees- in their own land.
Act we must: and act we will.
This is not a solicitation, but rather our effort to share with our friends the channels we have developed in responding to the massive relief effort required to address this unfolding tragedy, and to offer you the opportunity to leverage your contribution by our providing a dollar for dollar match.
We have focused our efforts on the three immediate areas of need--- in short, what we would need were we refugees:
a) Shelter b) Food c) Sustenance of Life: Clothing and Emergency Funds
Through the years, we have marveled at the ability of two Israeli based social service organizations that have mastered the challenge of caring for those in critical need.
American Friends of Migdal Ohr has relocated away from harm's way almost six thousand refugees, mostly women and children. With our help, they will double that number immediately.
In His Image, working in conjunction with several humanitarian organizations, renown for financing all requisite needs of the neediest among us, has established makeshift kitchens offering thousands of meals to the local refugees and the many soldiers passing through the North.
Furthermore, there is an immediate humanitarian need of an additional 10,000 families; some with needs as basic as baby formula.
We have committed to match all contributions made in response to this letter to a maximum of five million dollars. Inasmuch as these charities have identified additional matching opportunities from other sources, our matching program, will, to a great extent, create a triple leverage of your contribution.
In short your $100,000 contribution will have the sustaining impact of a $300,000 contribution.
These are tragic yet historic times for the people of Israel and the civilized world. History will reflect upon how we in the United States responded to this human tragedy created by forces that aim to destroy our way of life. Many of us were drawn to aid those impacted by the tragedies of 9/11, the wrath of Katrina and the human devastation of the tsunami. The world appreciated that the country of impact needed universal support. Relative to the size of the State of Israel, the human impact of this crisis is far too great for the country to bear alone.
