CHESSED OPPORTUNITY
Sarah Shapiro On Anger and Featured in the Upcoming Inspired For Women - Oct 8 at 9:30 PM
"Although anger can quite literally destroy us, it isn't an enemy that can be crushed and banished. It's an intrinsic facet of our personalities, and is purposefully designed into our being, and needn't, cannot be denied. It can provide us with superb insight into our own usually hidden selves. What is it that irritates, annoys, infuriates us? The more developed our capacity to identify what's really bothering us, and to recognize that the true object of our anger always lies within, not in the external phenomenon, then the better our chances of becoming our own masters. Anger, which can work so powerfully against happiness, is the very tool we've been given to get a handle on our invisible, elusive inner selves. What aggravates me? Why does it inflame me? The more truthful our answers, the more light that's shed on what makes us tick."
Mrs. Shapiro is featured in the "Inspired for Women", movie which will be shown at Ahavas Yisroel this Motza'ei Shabbos at 9:30 PM. The film is hosted by Rebbetzin Feige Twerski and features interviews with Rebbetzins Tziporah Heller & Gila Manolson as wells as Miriam Adahan, Julia Blum, Sara Rigler and many others who share their personal journeys to Torah life. R' Yakov Haber on Improving our Kavannah in Shema - What is the Necessary Kavannah?
The Shulchan Orach rules that mitzvos required Kavannah although it is a machlokes in the Gemorra and among Rishonim. The basic Kavannah is that we are doing the act to follow for the purpose of fulfilling a commandment from Hashem. The Chaye Adom has a leniency on this halacha that says if you are doing the mitzvah in its proper context (ie saying Krias Shema sandwiched between it's brochas in Shul) you have fulfilled the commandment b'dieved. However everyone agrees it is better to have Kavannah.
By Krias Shema there is an additional Kavannah required, the we are accepting the yoke of Hashem (Kabalas Ol Malchus Shmayim). This Kavannah can not be fulfilled with the Chaye Adom's leniency.
The mp3 for this 15 minute shiur is here.

SHIUR FOR WOMEN - PARHAS RE'EH
SHALOSH SEUDOS PROGRAM RESUMES SHABBOS PARSHAS RE'EH

R' Yakov Haber - This Week on Torah Web
Threefold Purpose of Blessings
“V’achalta v’savata u’veirachta es Hashem Elokecha ‘al ha’aretz hatovah ‘asher nasan lach” - “and you shall eat and be satisfied and bless Hashem, your G-d, for the good land which he has given you” (Eikev 8:10). This passage serves as the Biblical source for the commandment to bless Hashem after a meal. (Bread must be consumed to be obligated min haTorah due to the proximity of the passage “a land in which you will eat bread unsparingly” (verse 9) to this passage (see B’rachot 44a). Some rishonim maintain that even the B’racha Mei’ein Shalosh recited after other foods made from grain and after fruit of the Seven Species is also Biblical in nature (see Mishna B’rura to O.C. 209:10).) Although the overwhelming majority of blessings, such as those before eating food and before performing mitzvot, are Rabbinic in origin, Birchas HaMazon is Min HaTorah. Ramban (Hashmatos l’Mitzvos ‘Asei 15) and other rishonim maintain that the blessing before Torah study is also of Biblical origin and is derived from the verse “ki sheim Hashem ekra, havu go’del lailokeinu” -- “when I call out the name of Hashem, give praise to our G-d” (Ha’azinu 32:3).
However, on a Torah level, a blessing need be recited only after eating food but, by contrast, it is recited before engaging in Torah study. Chazal (our Rabbis) instituted additional blessings before eating bread (and other foods) as well as a blessing after reading the Torah in public. Meshech Chachma suggests a fascinating rationale for the difference in placement between Birchas HaMazon and Birchot HaTorah on a Torah level. All blessings thank the Source of All for His kindness. Birchat HaMazon focuses on physical bounty whereas Birchot HaTorah focus on the spiritual endowment of Torah. With respect to this aspect of praise of G-d, both of these blessings should have been recited in the same location. However, each of these blessings also reinforces another idea, each uniquely relevant to the sphere of life it addresses. This particular theme helps explain the blessing’s Biblical placement.
Eating, or more generally, partaking of material goods yielded through much hard work and energy, can lead to an attitude of haughty self-achievement, without properly recognizing that it is Hashem who has provided the physical wherewithal, the physical goods and infrastructure and the mental acumen (see Targum Onkelos to verse 18) for the production of such bounty. This danger exists primarily after partaking of the material goods, after being satisfied by them. Hence, the Torah directs us: be certain to recognize G-d as the Source of the bounty by praising Him as the “zan es hakol” and the bestower of the Land of Israel from which the food was produced. (See also Eretz Yisrael, by Rav Mayer Twersky.) The context of this commandment verifies this approach. Immediately preceding the commandment, the Torah indicates that the miracle of the forty-year daily delivery of man in the desert served to highlight to the Jewish People the fact that “Man does not live by bread alone, but through the word of G-d, does Man live” (ibid. 3) which (among other meanings) can be read as: it is not your efforts alone that bring about the bread, but, just as the manna from the sky was clearly Divinely granted, so too bread from the ground is also Divinely granted through the mask of the natural order created by G-d.[1] After the commandment to bless G-d after eating, the Torah warns us: “and lest you grow haughty and you forget G-d ... who has fed you man in the desert ... and you will say: ‘my strength and the might of my hand produced this bounty.’ And you shall remember Hashem, your G-d, for it is He who gives you strength to produce bounty” (ibid. 14-1).
Concerning Torah study, the opposite is true. Once having studied it, plumbed its depths, partaken of its mysteries and delights, the Torah is clearly recognizable as a Divine work, which, due to Divine beneficence, was given to Bnei Yisrael to partake of. However, before studying it, the student must be made aware of its Divine origin: that the Torah is not a wisdom like all other wisdoms, intellectually stimulating, fascinating but not directly Divine in origin. The danger exists of the Torah being utilized as a tool for personal intellectual achievement. Therefore, the learner of Torah must first recognize the Torah’s source. A passage in tractate N’darim (81a) attributes the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash to the omission of the blessing on the Torah. Some commentaries (see Ran and Bach (on Tur O.C. 47)) suggest that the omission of a blessing was symptomatic of treating the Torah like any other wisdom whose study does not require a blessing. R. Chayim Volozhin in his Nefesh HaChayim (4:6-7) writes that it is advisable before and during Torah study to stop learning temporarily to contemplate that one is actually studying the Divine Word and connecting to Hashem “for He and His Will (as expressed in the Torah) are One.” Some recite various tefilos before Torah study (in addition to the one mentioned in the Mishna (B’rachot 28b)) requesting that the Torah study lead to increased fear of Heaven (see standard edition of Yachin U’Boaz Mishnayot). All of these practices highlight this same theme.
From morning to evening, halacha demands of its adherents to constantly praise G-d through blessings: on waking up, on walking, on seeing, on eating, on drinking, on bodily functions, on learning, on mitzvot. Indeed, Chazal legislated the recital of a minimum of 100 blessings a day (see Shulchan Aruch 46:3). The triple themes of praise to G-d for providing for our spiritual and physical needs, recognition that it is He alone Who allows us to succeed, and appreciation of the ultimate sanctity of the greatest of His gifts to us - His wisdom as contained in the Torah which He has allowed us to enjoy - should guide us throughout our engagement in both the spiritual and physical aspects of existence.
[1] This particular point is an addition to Meshech Chachma’s words.

Torah Trivia Quiz Results
Congratulations to Irwin Nathan who correctly answered that the last time Parshas Maasey was leined as a single Parsha was in 1984. Congratulations also to Yisroel Benedek who correctly answered that the two times before that were in 1981 and 1967 (and who also knew the next three times this happens).
Just to put that in perspective, here are some things that were not in existence, or not yet popular, in those years:
1984 – Cellphones, CDs, DVDs, laptops, the Internet, Instant Messaging, Starbucks, Microsoft Windows, faxes, Google, Congregation Ahavas Yisroel, Wasserman’s at 73rd Avenue, Blackberries, attached houses in Kew Gardens Hills above $85,000, scanners, MRIs, the Lexus car line, Rabbi Reisman’s Nach Shiur, SUVs, Poland Spring, ink dot printers, digital cameras, MP3 players
1981 – Video, Apple Macintosh, Baby Bells, artificial heart transplants
1967 – Cassette tapes, microwaves, Microsoft, digital watches, ATMs, learning in ‘The Mir’, the Concorde, Wasserman’s, Shimon’s Pizza, PCs, CNN, StarWars, attached houses in Kew Gardens Hills above $25,000, sliced bread (just kidding!)

World-Wide 'Shema' Wednesday.
The prayer is intended to ask for Divine help to prevent violence toward the planned expulsion of Jewish residents from Gaza and northern Samaria and for Divine intervention to cancel the plan. The prayer is organized under the motto, United We Stand, Divided We Fall.
The prayer will be recited at 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Western Wall (Kotel) in Jerusalem and at 2 p.m. in New York.
Children around the world also are being asked to pray together the following night, one day before the beginning of the new Hebrew month Av. Former Chief Rabbi of Israel Mordechai Eliyahu will lead the Thursday night prayer at the Western Wall.
An unidentified group of women initiated the call for the children's prayer, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Israel (12:30 p.m. in New York).
Chabad (Lubavitch) leaders said they are encouraging children to attend the prayer rally at the Western Wall, where more than 20,000 children are expected.

ACHEINU BEIS YISROEL
Rabbi Yakov Blugrond’s kashrut inspections take him to exotic spots across the globe. In over a decade of traveling for the OU, he’s been just about everywhere but Mars, ...A Rabbinic Field Representative doesn’t have to venture into outer space for an interesting encounter. It could happen as close as…Turkey. I’ll let the transcontinental rabbi take it from here.
I traveled to Istanbul to supervise a large company with various production sites. One of them stood at the border of Turkey, Iran, and Iraq. Since I knew I was going to have to stay over Shabbat, I found a hotel in close enough proximity to a Sephardi shul. I came to Turkey with the normal operational equipment for a long distance mashgiach – a small piece of meat, a little crock pot, a few frozen challot, a box of matzot, and a jar of gefilte fish. I requested a hotel room on the lowest floor possible, so that I wouldn’t have to climb too many flights on Shabbat. I also made sure they disconnected the electricity from my hotel room door so that I could open it with a key rather than a card. Before I left for work on Friday morning, I put up my chulent. My Shabbat in Istanbul was set.
On Shabbat morning, as I walked through the lobby, I noticed a fellow wearing a yarmulke. I wished him “Shabbat Shalom” and “Shalom aleichem” We exchanged our reasons for being in Turkey. Turned out he’s an American physician who came to deliver a series of lectures at a university here. I asked my new acquaintance if he wanted to join me on my walk to shul. He gratefully acquiesced, saying he wasn’t aware there were any shuls in the area. I asked him what he planned to eat for the Shabbat. He said he had a can of tuna and some matzot. I told him to forget the tuna and come to my room after davening for some hot chulent. He couldn’t believe it.
As we walked towards the exit, the receptionist called out to us saying the hotel manager requested a word with me. I entered the manager’s office, curious as to what he wanted. “I feel uncomfortable telling you this, but the maids are reporting a scent of something cooking coming from your hotel room,” said the manager. I explained that it’s the Sabbath day and we aren’t allowed to cook, so on Friday I prepared a special traditional food made of meat, barley, beans and potatoes. Telling him that this is what we eat for lunch. “Oh, you mean you made chamin! Why didn’t you tell me? I would have gotten you the food.” The hotel manager was a Sephardi born in Istanbul. His family found themselves in Turkey the same way my family wound up in Holland at the end of the 15th century after their expulsion from Spain. I said, I’ll tell you what – at 1:00 we’re eating in my room. Come join us.
He came, bringing with him a few bottles of beer. The three of us had our seudat Shabbat. We sang Israeli zemiros, regular zemiros, Sephardi zemiros. We had a mizumim to bentch. We spent the time enjoying our hotel room #205 Shabbat together until it was time to go for mincha. The manager came too.
The hotel gave me the royal treatment for the rest of my stay. As our time there drew to a close, the doctor from America bid me a warm farewell, and we each went our separate ways. I felt happy to have shared an unexpected Shabbat – enhanced by the company of my fellow Jewish travelers.

Jewish Boys for Adoption Update
I just spoke with a wonderful man named Rabbi Dovid Vandervelde. He is a real estate manager, and serves as the (unpaid) president of a licensed adoption agency. You may have received an email that originated from him.
Several weeks ago, he sent an email to a woman with an update on current issues. Included in this email was a brief mention that he needed to find a good family to adopt two boys.
Two Jewish boys, brothers aged 7 and 9, are now separated from each other and in foster care. They needed immediate placement in a warm, “frum” home, and the agency was given all of one month to find that suitable home—or they would remain separated and sent to (possibly) non-Jewish homes.
He gave the woman his phone number, and of course his email address. She forwarded the message to a few people. And they forwarded it on. And then it stormed the Jewish Internet.
Over 3000 calls. From all over the world. Most every state of the union. Litvaks, Modern, Young Israel, Lubavitch, Satmar, Bobov, observant Conservative, you name it. And those who couldn’t adopt, offered money, free legal services, and more.
He was so beseiged that he “spun” the story very negatively, to discourage applicants. He said that the children had been “thrown around” the foster care system, and he wanted specifically a couple that included a social worker, psychologist, pediatrician or similar professional experience caring for troubled children.
Depite all of this, they are now sorting through over 100 applicants to help these boys.
“Who is like your nation?” And please, if you get that email, do not call!

IS IT TRUE?
The Me Generation seems to be living up to its name. A recent article in The Wall Street Journal described the struggle nonprofit organizations are facing in their attempt to lure a new generation of lay leaders. These organizations can’t understand why so many bright young professionals are not interested in getting involved in altruistic causes.

Join Hundreds Of Other Women
In this light, a campaign was started that is twofold. First, women across the globe have committed to saying Tefillas Channa on Friday night after candle lighting on behalf of these young couples. Second, your help is needed to add to our already compiled list of the Hebrew names of the couples (both husband and wife) who find themselves in this unfortunate situation. The list is updated and e-mailed weekly. Names are kept on the list until a baby is born. Confidentiality is 100%, as only those who submit the names know who they are. It has become the first tefilla list were every name that came off the list would be for a very good reason (our first name was taken off last week after the birth of a baby girl). You are requested to update us when a name can be taken off the list, so that we can all share in the good news.
This is a worthwhile project, and we would truly appreciate your assistance and involvement. Please forward this e-mail to any and all friends and acquaintances you feel may be interested.

Link to Parent's Prayer Written by the Shelah Hakodesh - For Day Before Rosh Chodesh Sivan
The classic work, Shelah HaKadosh, contains a prayer that parents should recite for their children at any time of the year — but especially on the day before Rosh Chodesh Sivan, for that is the month when God gave us the Torah, and when the Jewish people began to be called His Children. On that day, he writes, fathers and mothers should give charity to the poor and repent. They should even fast, if they are able to.
Here is the link to the prayer on Artscroll's Website.

To Do - Call Your Congressman in Support of Non Public School Tax Credit
Mordechai Biser, Esq., Associate General Counsel
RE: Legislative proposal TO ASSIST YESHIVOS
We're all concerned about the high cost of yeshiva tuition, and the difficulty many needy parents have with paying full tuition for their children's education.
There is now a bill in the New York State Legislature, drafted in part by Agudath Israel of America, that could bring financial relief for many families with children in yeshiva elementary and high schools. The bill would, among other things, give a 50% tax credit to individuals and companies contributing to scholarship funds for students in nonpublic schools. (A tax credit, unlike a deduction, is a direct reduction in one's tax bill. In other words, if a taxpayer donates $500 to a scholarship fund, he will be able to subtract $250 from the taxes he owes the state.)
The bottom line is that if the bill is enacted, it would significantly encourage private sector contributions to scholarship funds for students in yeshivos and other nonpublic schools. This could potentially provide needy families in our community with a source of much-needed scholarship assistance. Somewhat similar programs in Pennsylvania and Arizona have brought millions of dollars in private contributions into scholarship funds, enabling many nonpublic school students to receive significant tuition assistance.
We need your help to get this bill passed. Please take a moment now to call your Assemblymember and State Senator. Urge them to sign on as sponsors of the educational tax incentives act and to vote for its passage.
1. To be connected to your Assemblymember (or if you don't know who your Assemblymember is), call the Assembly information office at 518-455-4218. Be prepared to give your name and address, and leave a message with whomever you can if you can't get to speak with your Assemblymember directly. Tell your Assemblymember to sponsor and vote for Assembly bill A. 6145-b.
2. To be connected to your State Senator, or if you don't know who your State Senator is, call the Senate information office at 518-455-3216. Tell your State Senator to sponsor and vote for Senate bill S. 3101-b.
These two very short phone calls could help bring much-needed financial relief to families and schools in our community.
Please then pass this e-mail along to as many friends as you can who are likely to make similar calls. Many thanks.
