A Wonderful Story by Rabbi Yakov Horowitz

Embrace Life – and Give Thanks
By: Yakov Horowitz
This past Sunday, at 12:30 p.m., I was standing outside the school building of Yeshiva Darchei Noam, where I serve as Menahel (Dean). I was chatting with several fathers in our school as they waited for their sons to be dismissed. The conversation turned to tuition affordability, tzedakah matters, and the overwhelming needs commanding the tzedakah attention of people nowadays. Toillustrate the point, one of the parents in my school mentioned to me that in the two hours since I had seen him last (we had a yeshiva meeting from 9:30 to 10:30 that morning) about 30 people visited his home soliciting funds for personal or institutional needs. I asked my friend why he does not hire a gabbai tzedakah (a secretary to distribute his charitable dollars). He responded that he considers it a more significant mitzvah – and more respectful to the donor – to give the money himself. A few minutes later, the kids were dismissed and I went home shaking my head at the incredible devotion to charity that my friend demonstrated. I got home, fixed myself a quick lunch, and at 3:00 p.m., prepared to leave my home heading to the park for some much-needed exercise and down time. As I was about to leave, the doorbell rang and my 10-year-old daughter Sara informed me that someone was at the door soliciting funds. I was already heading to the garage and my car, eager to catch the last 90 minutes of sunlight, so I asked my wife to please meet with the individual in my place. As I opened the door to the garage, I thought to myself that if my friend can see 30 people in 2 hours, I could take a few minutes to meet this individual myself. I retraced my steps and opened the front door. There was a middle-aged man soliciting for funds on behalf of a school for troubled teens that he runs in Eretz Yisroel (Israel). I gave him my donation, we chatted for a moment and then parted company. About one minute into our conversation, I heard the squealing of tires, followed by a resounding crash. A driver missed a stop sign around the corner from my home and plowed through the intersection at 40 MPH – right at the time and place (and on my driver’s side – the most vulnerable spot) that I would have been had I delegated the charity giving to my wife and headed out to the park! (With the grace of Hashem, no one was seriously injured.)

Sarah Shapiro On Anger and Featured in the Upcoming Inspired For Women - Oct 8 at 9:30 PM

Sarah Shapiro has a good post On Anger and Yomin Noraim. Here is an excerpt:

"Although anger can quite literally destroy us, it isn't an enemy that can be crushed and banished. It's an intrinsic facet of our personalities, and is purposefully designed into our being, and needn't, cannot be denied. It can provide us with superb insight into our own usually hidden selves. What is it that irritates, annoys, infuriates us? The more developed our capacity to identify what's really bothering us, and to recognize that the true object of our anger always lies within, not in the external phenomenon, then the better our chances of becoming our own masters. Anger, which can work so powerfully against happiness, is the very tool we've been given to get a handle on our invisible, elusive inner selves. What aggravates me? Why does it inflame me? The more truthful our answers, the more light that's shed on what makes us tick."

Mrs. Shapiro is featured in the "Inspired for Women", movie which will be shown at Ahavas Yisroel this Motza'ei Shabbos at 9:30 PM. The film is hosted by Rebbetzin Feige Twerski and features interviews with Rebbetzins Tziporah Heller & Gila Manolson as wells as Miriam Adahan, Julia Blum, Sara Rigler and many others who share their personal journeys to Torah life. Misheberach for Cholim Process

We want to review the Misheberach for cholim process. In order to balance the needs of our members who want a misheberach to be made on Shabbos for a choleh and the Tircha D'Tzibur created by a very lengthy list, the following is the procedure as suggested by the Rav:

After the 6th aliyah (shishi) the gabbai makes a misheberach aloud for cholim that are on the shul list. The shul list is comprised of names submitted by the members for cholim in their families.
ALL OTHER NAMES ARE TO BE INSERTED, BY THE INDIVIDUAL, WHILE STANDING AT THIER SEAT.

Finally, the shul list will be renewed every 3 months. Wishing a Refuah Shleima L'chol Cholei Yisroel.

While speeding on the highways of Daf Yomi, we often drive past/by/over the depth and beauty of many sugyas. Fortunately, R' Yechezkel Rosenberg is providing a wonderful tour of the sugyas in the seventh perak of Berachos. R' Yakov Haber on Improving our Kavannah in Shema - What is the Necessary Kavannah?

R' Yakov Haber began the series on improving our Kavannah in the first posuk in Krias Shema and the first brocha of Shemoneh Esrai by discussing what is the necessary Kavannah for Shema.

The Shulchan Orach rules that mitzvos required Kavannah although it is a machlokes in the Gemorra and among Rishonim. The basic Kavannah is that we are doing the act to follow for the purpose of fulfilling a commandment from Hashem. The Chaye Adom has a leniency on this halacha that says if you are doing the mitzvah in its proper context (ie saying Krias Shema sandwiched between it's brochas in Shul) you have fulfilled the commandment b'dieved. However everyone agrees it is better to have Kavannah.

By Krias Shema there is an additional Kavannah required, the we are accepting the yoke of Hashem (Kabalas Ol Malchus Shmayim). This Kavannah can not be fulfilled with the Chaye Adom's leniency.

The mp3 for this 15 minute shiur is here.
